It is most essential to buy a HEALTHY PUPPY who has been reared and socialised correctly and is the right breed of dog for you and your circumstances than to buy a puppy
because it is a fashionable breed or colour
PLEASE NOTE
The recognised genuine colours for the French Bulldog are PIED, BRINDLE, & FAWN.
If a Frenchies coat colour is anything other than the colours given in the Kennel Club Breed Standard then it has an undesirable coat colour which is not recognised as typical of this breed.
WARNING - French Bulldogs should NOT be
Blue, Lilac, Chocolate, Black & Tan , Merle, or any colour or pattern
other than the colours recognised in the Kennel Club Breed Standard
Please do not buy a French Bulldog puppy in any of these so called rare fashion colours. They are not rare , they are undesirable and not typical of the breed.
There may also have been other breeds introduced into the breeding to produce these colours.
These other breeds may not have the correct temperament for a French Bulldog.
NO BREEDER WHO CARES DEEPLY ABOUT THE BREED
WILL EVER BREED THESE COLOURS INTENTIONALLY
NO FRENCH BULLDOG CLUB OR BREED STANDARD WORLDWIDE ACCEPTS THESE COLOURS

HEALTH SCHEME 2019 UPDATE
The French Bulldog Club of England’s committee decided that we will no longer issue certificates or validate any health tests that are returned to us for Non-Recognised Colour French Bulldogs.
This took affect from the 31st March 2019.
The 4 standard colours are: -Brindle, Fawn,Pied (brindle and white) Fawn Pied (fawn and white)
The Club feels strongly that we are there to maintain the tradition of the standard colours and in awarding certificates, our members feel that we are validating the breeding of non standard colours.
Since its foundation in 1902 the Club and its members have been dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and well being of the breed, now over 120 years later those standards remain unchanged: to adopt the Kennel Club Breed Standard by which French Bulldogs shall be judged; to urge the adoption of that standard upon owners, breeders and exhibitors including the correct and acceptable coat colours for the breed and to breed for health, longevity, and correct conformation.
The club is dedicated to the health and well being of all French Bulldogs and would advise anybody with Non-Recognised Colour dogs to still Health Test before considering breeding, All of the relevant information is available to everyone here on our website on the Health Scheme page.

IMPORTANT Please read this advice before buying a French Bulldog puppy
Try to buy a puppy from parents that have been health tested and hold the French Bulldog Health Scheme 'Bronze' 'Silver' and 'Gold' Certificates. The puppy should also have been checked by a vet and have had its first vaccination before you buy it. Ask to see the documentation.
WARNING - NEVER NEVER BUY A PUPPY WITHOUT SEEING IT WITH ITS MOTHER
Probably the WORST possible way to purchase your puppy is through a Pet Shop, a Puppy Farm, Facebook or social media websites, a Puppy Broker or from one of the Free Newspapers.
Most reputable breeders do not advertise, they strive to produce good health, good temperament, and good conformation. They usually have a waiting list for their puppies. This is the kind of breeder who has very likely put a great deal of time and effort into breeding and raising quality French Bulldogs and will want to give them the very best of homes. It's best to more interested in good temperament, healthy long-lived lines, and sound structure, rather than what colour your would like your puppy to be, however whichever colour you choose it must comply to the Breed Standard. There is no such thing as "rare" colours in the French Bulldog.
Look for breeders who are members of a Breed Club and who have bred dogs who have gained entry into the KC Stud Register, this is indicated by certain accolades beside their name.

BEWARE OF PUPPY BROKERS AND DEALERS
These are people who import litters of puppies in bulk from abroad (usually Eastern European countries ), sometimes they are imported legitimately and sometimes not ( smuggled in ).
Brokers and dealers always advertise on the internet and in the free papers. If you see advertisements saying that the puppy has a ' Pet Passport' beware because the puppy will have been bred abroad. The puppy should be at least 15 weeks old to comply with the legal requirements for importation. Many have forged passports... beware. They may not have had the correct vaccinations, including the vaccination for Rabies which should only be given once the puppy is 12 weeks of age, they may have heath issues, they would have travelled many many hours in the back of a van in cramped conditions along with lots of other puppies, so there is a greater risk of them catching something.
You will not be able to see the parents or what conditions the puppy was reared in.
A puppy from a puppy broker will have a pedigree full of foreign named dogs
who have been bred and registered in another country.
Puppy brokers will re-register the imported puppies with the UK Kennel Club
in order that the pups have a UK Registration Document.
Many puppy brokers come across as really nice caring people but will make all sorts of plausible excuses why you cannot see the mother, beware, this type of seller has only one interest in mind,
to make as big a profit as they can for themselves sadly at the expense of a helpless puppy.
IF SOMEONE SAYS THEY CAN GET YOU WHAT EVER COLOUR OR SEX OF PUPPY THAT YOU WANT, THEN THEY ARE ALMOST CERTAINLY A PUPPY BROKER OR DEALER.
Remember that your decision to acquire a French Bulldog from a particular breeder
will affect you (and your French Bulldog) for up to the next 14 years.

Buyers Guide
Choosing and bringing home the right dog for you
There are many things to consider as a dog owner. Your responsibilities to your dog and the community are very important to ensure that dogs and their owners are welcomed into society. It is important to know that each breed has its own characteristics, its own function. If you match these with your personality and lifestyle, it is much more likely that you will have a happy and fulfilling relationship with your dog.
Considering Buying a Dog?
Before buying a dog, you must ask yourself:
- Can I afford to buy the dog I want?
- Can I make a lifelong commitment to a dog – a dog’s average life span is 12 years?
- Can I afford between £7.00 and £10.00 per week to feed a dog?
- Can I afford veterinary fees? These can be in the thousands for some conditions
- Can I afford to insure my dog?
- Some companies will not insure French Bulldogs at all or will not cover certain health conditions
- Is my home big enough to house a dog?
- Do I really want to exercise a dog every day?
- Will there be someone at home for a dog – dogs get lonely just like humans?
- Will I find time to train, groom and generally care for a dog?
- Will I be able to answer YES to these questions every day of the year?

A little about joint ownership:
This means you and the breeder would both own him or her. Joint-ownership's are good and bad. Make sure you have a contract and ask a lot of questions, put it in BLACK AND WHITE. Know your breeder and make sure you want to deal with this person for the life for your French Bulldog. You may be required to breed the dog, or let the breeder do it. You may have to breed her once or twice and give the breeder a puppy or more than one, or you have to provide free stud service for the breeders bitches. Do not enter into a joint-ownership if you think you may change your mind about what you agreed to in the beginning, the breeder may not be understanding If you can't breed or show him or her you may have to send him or her to the breeder, do you want to lose the dog for weeks or months? What if he/she develops a problem or an unsuitable temperament for breeding? These questions should be addressed and put in the contract before the dog leaves for his or her new home. Think very carefully before joint-owning a dog, put it in black and white.
Loan Agreements
Some breeders will only sell you a bitch puppy if you agree to loan your Frenchie (when she is old enough) back to them in order that he/she (the breeder) can have a litter from her. However, this type of agreement is not common practice in our breed. The Kennel Club approved loan agreement is valid for no less than a six month period which means that the breeder can keep your Frenchie for that amount of time. It might seem a nice idea at the time to allow your Frenchie to have puppies but remember that pregnancy and whelping in the French Bulldog may be difficult and in some cases can result in complications, as many Frenchies do not give birth naturally and require a Caesarean operation. The anaesthetic can pose a serious risk and may in the most extreme cases result in the death of your Frenchie and the pups.
Be very cautious about entering into this type of agreement, make sure you understand all the implications, consider the mental and physical stress your pet will suffer whilst she is away from you and do not forget that all of your Frenchies puppies will belong to the breeder, not you!
There are also people who simply bred together any male and any female and produced puppies. They do no research, so they don't know the incidence of deformities, health problems or poor temperament in their lines. When you buy from these people, you are essentially buying generic little dogs with unknown genes. Their Kennel Club registration papers say French Bulldog only because the parents were registered with the Kennel Club as French Bulldogs, that is no guarantee about structure, health, or temperament. These people just take your money and do not want to know if you need help or anything goes wrong.
