Well, everyone it’s a bit of a long one, so where to start! 3 years in the making, what should have been in 2020 and put back due to the loss of hotels, alongside 2 years of Covid restrictions, finally The Supreme Trophy Awards Gala, aka STAG was back for 2022,
and we came back with a vengeance!
The new venue was the Double Tree by Hilton, Swindon and it really did not disappoint. Any new venue, whilst on paper ticks the boxes, it is not until its happening that you see if it’s going to work or not, thankfully it was the latter! The staff could not have been more accommodating, from check in with a cookie for the humans and dog treats for the pooches to every level of bar and food service. It was the first time the hotel had allowed a dog event to go ahead on this scale,we are very pleased to report they are gagging for us to go back, so we are already booked in for the next 3 years on the same dates, the 2nd weekend in November with next year’s event being the 11th & 12th November 2023, with the theme being
“The Black & White Ball” #DiamondsAreFURever

The Lydiard Suite at the hotel was a lovely square room, we gave the biggest priority to the ring size to ensure plenty of room for the dogs and then the rest of the room was filled with the stage with the club’s amazing silverware, representing these top awards. We had 5 stalls selling their wares, a fabulous “help yourself” Pick N’ Mix sweet trolley and in prime position were Laura Hamilton and Vanessa Bryant, ready to run the health testing over both days, they were certainly kept busy with lots of breeds as well as frenchies.
The Morning Showcase is a wonderful warm up to the day, we have extra classes for those attending STAG with dogs that have maybe not qualified for the event and extras brought along for the next day’s Championship show, again a Secret judge, with this years being Jackie Mavro covering 3 classes of Veterans, Special Brace pair and then Breeders Teams. Veteran was won by CH Xentique Pandamonium JW ShCM, the pairs were won by Theapaul Lady Magic & Theapaul Indian Summer and the teams by the Ruption Knightcott’s. Many prizes and the start of the wonderful rosettes,
all cleverly designed and finished off by Charlotte Swateridge.

So, how does S.T.A.G work? Based on points from class wins over the past 12 months, it was an honour to qualify, with our 3 secret judges kept hidden till the moment they were introduced, they were Irene Stansfield, Jane Lilley and Colin Blair. Working on rounds with a cut from each, until each category had a final last dog, then those 6 dogs went head to head to be declared the STAG Best in Show and Reserve Best in Show. The top honours this year were
Best in Show – CH Chelmbull Rocket Man and Reserve Best in Show CH Roalice Mini Mouse,
two very worthy winners, both oozing quality.
***************
A wonderful atmosphere around the ring with lots of cheers and applause for each round knockout, the day is an inclusive one so no one leaves without gifts and prizes. This year’s qualifiers all received a golden bag of goodies, notebook, pen, poo bags, a catalogue, a large tray of treats and the most wonderful Frenchie ringclip armband, created by DeeForDog designs.
***************
The daytime event finished at approx 4.30 and then the room was turned around to be ready for the evening event party. When we said about running a 1920s theme, we never knew how many would join in as the option is not compulsory, well we were not disappointed. Arriving at the bar area in the evening was a sea of Flappers, Gangsters, Peaky Blinders, Dolls and Molls! At the meet and greet were our 3 Gatsby Girls, ready to handout a voucher for a free drink, just showing how grateful we were for everyone’s support. The room looked amazing, the tables had been finished by Charlotte with a superb 1920s centre piece light and small hessian pouches filled with more gifts and a note, hoping they would be re-used as treat pouches for the dogs. We sat to a delightful 3 course meal, served efficiently, and presented well and very importantly, it was hot and tasty! As well as more boxed treats of homemade Tiffin for after the meal, created by the gorgeous Babs Jordan, each table had a secret gold wrapped box. When opened, inside were mini bottle of Prosecco, all provided by our Club president, Lucy Bonsall as a thank you and to celebrate her first year in the role, what a lovely touch and so generous for everyone, even the 2 kids attending even got their own child friendly version too, no one was going to be left out!
***************
In one of the spare corners of the room we had our Magic Mirror Photo booth set up, this had proved a real success the last time so we couldn’t deny everyone much mirth this time around as well, the photos were printed on the day, and then we emailed everyone the HQ versions,
you can see the photos further down this page.
During the meal our Gatsby girls did 3 performances, with the last being a participation one, if anyone fancied it! The dancefloor was packed with us all attempting to learn the Charleston! Not a great sight after much food and alcohol, but we did our best. We did our extra awards for the” Best Dressed Couple”, this was oversubscribed so it was down to the club president, Lucy to go over all the exhibits and choose a winner! Her Best Dressed Couple were Dorota Plominska and partner, Szczepan Kil. Thanking of all our judges and the amazing STAG committee ensued and then it was dancing till the early hours with a wonderful DJ, who not only covered the music for the night, but had set up all the lights around the room which really added to the whole atmosphere, a fantastic night was had by all.
A MASSIVE thank you to all the exhibitors, sponsors, judges and to the amazing team that brought this all together, we really hope to see you all next year, remember to bring along friends and anyone looking for the best fun filled day and night at a lovely hotel. The FBCE can certainly show you how to party!

MORNING SHOWCASE JUDGE REPORT
This year the FBCE celebrated their 160 years anniversary, and it was also the first time STAG (Supreme Trophy Awards Gala) has taken place since Covid lockdown. It was most certainly a day and night to remember for all the right reasons. The Hilton hotel was a wonderful venue with not only great rooms and food but little touches like treats for the dogs and cookies for the guests on arrival. The show venue itself was spacious and looked amazing with incredible rosettes with 3D Frenchie heads all in the themed colours of gold and black. All the exhibitors received gold and black satin ring clips about which I was quite envious.
The evening itself was one joyous 1920’s themed celebration with a fantastic time being had by all. I think it was the best STAG evening so far and congratulations to all those committee members involved in its planning. I was both delighted and honoured to be asked to judge the Morning Showcase and even managed to remain the “Mystery Judge” until the actual day. Three lovely veterans strutted their stuff giving no signs of their true ages. I found my winner in Dom Hogan’s dog Ch Xentique Pandamonium for Baclaudi JW ShCM but Lynsey Roach’s girl Roalice Mini Mouse pressed strongly for the top honours, I wished I could have awarded both first place rosettes. Then came the pairs and I must say I was astonished at the number of entries, with 9 setsof pairs all together! It is so nice to see a pairs class when the breeders and owners have a chance to show parents, offspring and siblings together. My winning pair was owned by Anthea Cheeseman, a mother and daughter, who looked so alike if one hadn’t have been brindle and the other fawn one couldn’t tell them apart. Finally, I had two teams, and the winner was the Ruption Knightcott team and whose family of a dog and two bitches clearly showed the lines of their breeding.Well done to everybody who entered and thank you very much for trusting my judgement of your lovely dogs.

JUDGE'S REPORTS
I would like to thank the Officers and Committee of the French Bulldog Club of England. I was asked to be a secret judge along with Jane Lilley and Colin Blair on Saturday the 12th of November at the annual Supreme Trophy Awards Gala show, this being the first one since before covid. This was the most amazing show from start to finish. It was so well organised, and the room set out beautifully. Everyone from the club was so helpful and must have worked extremely hard. The presents are beautiful and will be treasured.
The dogs we judged were all lovely and in fabulous condition. While l was judging it was hard to split some of them as they were such good quality. I found it harder to judge the bitches. Jane, Colin and l agreed on most of the dogs we chose. It was such an honour to be asked to judge in such good company and l would like to say thank you again for asking me an opportunity l loved and an experience l will never forget.
Irene Stansfield

Having been involved with Frenchies since the early 1980's, it was on honour, privilege and pleasure to co-judge The French Bulldog Club of England S.T.A.G event, and what an event it was!
The very hard working officers and committee created the most stunning themed weekend. The attention to detail from table decorations, gifts, and rosettes to name a few were perfect. Also, no event of this kind can be a success without those attending. Thank you to exhibitors for accepting decisions with grace and sportsmanship and the ringside for creating such a good atmosphere. All the exhibits were presented in good clean condition, and it was lovely to go over some very typey dogs and bitches. Decisions were never going to be easy with so many quality dogs and bitches. The final line up was impressive and for best dog and best in show we found ourselves splitting hairs. Many congratulations to the winners and all owners and exhibitors for qualifying for this prestigious event.
Colin Blair
***************************************************************
Thank you to all the Club's Officers and Committee for such a marvellous weekend! I felt very thrilled to be invited to be one of three secret judges of one of my most favourite breeds but had never imagined just how truly incredible this would be.The show venue was rather similar to Aladdin's Cave, not only so beautifully laid out and decorated but chock full of cups, trophies and gifts together with the most fabulous rosettes - even those for the judges! Mere words are not enough to praise the truly wonderful two days of the S.T.A.G Orchestrated by Chairman Richie Cairns, the amount of hard work and dedication involved by his team both before and during the weekend produced nothing short of a masterpiece of three separate fabulous events including a glamorous 1920’s themed dinner dance and the championship show on Sunday.
Most importantly of all, were all those utterly charming, happy, healthy, immaculately presented dogs! All, without exception, with such good temperaments that no bark or even a small growl was to be heard throughout the weekend. I just loved those quizzical expressions, sizing me up on meeting. They were, simply, a joy to judge. Overall, it would seem that the breed is in a good state currently, at least ‘at source' with this being proved here by dedicated owners and breeders. Let us only hope that the breed's obvious desirability and current wave of over-popularity decreases along with the current crisis in the cost of living.
I felt that there is a growing tendency towards a lack of ideal balance - officially described as both compact and cobby - with many being too short on leg and longer in body. Also, I so wish that two extra descriptions could be included in the Standard. The first to have some idea as to height since there was a difference of some 4 inches in some classes, particularly during the championship show. Although weight is listed, I would defy the majority of judges to make an accurate assessment of this and cannot imagine any Frenchie's expression if lifted up like a Pekingese to ensure such! Secondly would be a mention of shoulder angulation. Without even a slight layback, it is physically impossible for a dog to move with any freedom or length to their stride and there were a number where this figured in my placings.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved, perhaps especially to ever-energetic Secretary, Michelle Smith, for her care and thoughtfulness. There was such great hospitality and generosity with a happy friendly atmosphere throughout. All the dogs, win or lose, were simply a joy to meet being full of fun and so obviously enjoying themselves as indeed I was!
